What’s in a Lesson?

Weekly private lessons typically feature warm-ups, technical exercises, sight-reading, adjustments of progress, and introduction to new material.  Throughout the student’s intermediate level of study, traditional concepts and materials introduced include technique and selections from the vast piano repertoire, until ultimately the advanced students enjoy classical training from the standard literature for the piano.  Students of all levels learn to find a relaxed, grounded alignment that encourages tension-free playing and the widest range of tone quality.  Lessons also cover musical analysis and theory, which helps students to develop their ears for musical ideas.

the importance of practice

The real learning takes place outside of the studio – at home!  Consistent, focused practice is the single most important factor to masterful playing.  Knowing how to practice paves the way for a lifetime of successful learning – regardless of the subject!  Students learn effective, efficient practice techniques that encourage them to feel both capable and challenged during daily practice time.  In addition, they are provided with tools such as specific, goal-oriented instructions and practice logs, to help get into the habit of consistent practice.

Although I only began my studies with Mrs. Carol at eight years old, she treated me like a serious student. She taught me the importance of scales and how to practice them and introduced me to an injury-prevention technique that has helped me tremendously over the years. Mrs. Carol pushed me to take music more seriously. Even when teaching younger students, Mrs. Carol deeply cares about passing the importance and the integrity of classical music and musicianship to her students. I am now a classical piano performance major in college, and my success thus far is largely attributed to her.

a note for parents

The Studio follows Schinichi Suzuki’s philosophy that states “any child can learn to play the piano.”  As parents, you are responsible for supporting your child’s commitment to the piano by ensuring that regular practice is a priority in your home.
